The hottest cold place on earth
One of the amazing things about Minneapolis is that while it's cold outside, it's amazingly hot inside. For some reason, hotels and restaurants seem to be heated to temperatures well above the California norm. I suppose this is just my body overreacting to how much warmer it is than outside, but I don't think so; I noticed it even after having been outside for hours previously.Posted by ekr at March 12, 2005 8:34 PM | Filed under:

I strongly suspect you're not imagining it. I remember this well from Canada--in very cold climates, public spaces are heated to high temperatures, probably to appeal to people who are entering from the cold, and want to warm up very quickly.

Hot and very dry. I was in Minneapolis last February. The skyway system linking many downtown buildings was so hot and dry it made me feel queasy. I don't get it. I feel the same way about refrigerated buildings at the peak of a hot and humid summer.

And in tropical countries the buildings are often air conditioned to well below california norms. What I find interesting is how we selected California as the norm.
