Psst.... Want to buy 4.5 million flu shots?
Due to extremely aggressive flu shot rationing, we appear to have an extra 4.5 million doses of flu vaccine, approximately 10% of the 50 million or so doses in the US. The natural reaction here is that the rationing was too aggressive, but that's not obviously true. If we hadn't rationed the shots, then they would have been fairly evenly distributed through the population. As it is, it went mainly to old people, who received more benefit from the vaccine--at least we thought at the time (though see here). On the other hand, if not that many more old people got the vaccine and the vaccine was just wasted, that's not so good.
