On Thursday I got back from my second abortive trip to the
Emigrant Wilderness. Two years ago I hiked in from Kennedy
Meadows and made it about a mile past the fork to Lunch Meadow/Mosquito Pass/Huckleberry Lake before the trail got so covered in snow I couldn't
get through. This time I went a month later and
made it about another 2 miles to Sheep Camp
before the same thing happened. Now, ordinarily I would probably
vote to keep going, but in this case I was on my own and without
anyone else to eat in case we got stuck, I decided to turn back.
According to the ranger, even if I had pressed on, Mosquito
Pass would have been completely snowed in, so I guess this was
a good decision. I guess August is more in order.
