However, I wouldn't encode on the face, but on the side. You can divot the role edge to include information.
Yes, but if the encoding is on the edge, someone will setup a cutter to slice it off, and then they might tape it to non-approved paper. To be effective, the encoding has to be across the paper completely.
Could you do it with UV-only reflective 2-d barcodes? That way the user wouldn't notice the copyright protection measure.
